It has recently been brought to my attention that there seems to be a bug in MT-Blacklist v2.x that will, upon weblog deletion, delete a second weblog.
As of this time, the cause of the bug is unknown to me as are the circumstances which would cause it to occur. With help from others, I've confirmed that it is, in fact, an MT-Blacklist bug, but it occurs inconsistently and is difficult to reproduce. It definitely affects v2.01b (the one distributed in the plugin pack) and may also affect v2.0e (the emergency release that works with MT 3.0D), although it's not certain. MT-Blacklist v1.x users are not affected, as far as I can tell.
Suffice it to say that as long as you don't delete any weblogs, you will not lose data.
I will be issuing a fix for this as soon as I figure out why it's happening. Sorry for any problems this has caused any of you. Please help me spread the word so that all MT-B users are aware of this problem.
UPDATE (2004/12/08): I've got a fix in place for this bug as well as the maketext bug and most Windows-based bugs. I am testing and will be releasing later today.
UPDATE (2004/12/10): The fix has been released for alpha testing.
The last client I worked with before shutting down the Blog Body Shop emailed me in a panic a few days back. He had deleted a test blog from within the Movable Type interface. He was more than certain that…

I didn't have this problem when I used MT 3.0D, but I did encounter the problem when using MT 3.1. However, when I upgraded to MT 3.12, the problem went away. I just deleted one of my test blogs moments ago and there were no issues.

keith, look at the bottom of the screen when you load the MT-Blacklist administrative interface.
Carla, you're brave. To everyone else don't delete any weblogs until the next version comes out.

Heh. Just addressed this in your support forum. I have a database dump and a repeatable case. If you want to send me an instrumented/debug version of MT blacklist, I can help debug.

To address what Carla said about version 3.12 - all of my testing (outlined in the Movable Type forum topic) was done in 3.121. As Jay points out, the behavior is highly inconsistent, so just because you can delete one weblog without ill effect does not mean you'll be safe the next time you delete one.

And by the way, I've noticed a lot of comments around the blogosphere saying things that are generally ridiculous. This comment is directed at those people (and only those people).
Paraphrasing:
I'm really disappointed in Six Apart for shipping this code.
or
Six Apart is responsible for this because the MT-Blacklist author works for Six Apart and is product manager for MT.
or
MT and MT-Blacklist (which are one in the same since the author of the latter is the product manager of the former)
To those of you who said things like this, I'd like to ask you to stay off of the crack.
Seriously though, I just started working at Six apart two weeks ago. This bug in MT-Blacklist was shipped long before that time. What's more, this is a bug in my software (not Six Apart's) and is my responsibility to fix as well as to alert people to it.
Six Apart does not own my code, nor do they own me. What I publish under Jayallen.org is mine and does not represent the company I work for (you bloggers, of all people, should understand this concept.) Here, I am, in fact, the same old benevolent (although sometimes quick to anger) tyrant you always knew.
And the first person who says that I surreptitiously put this bug in in order to increase the number of weblogs on individual installations (and hence the license fees to 6A) will get a punch in the nose special delivery from me.
In short, stop being a bunch of boneheads and let me concentrate on getting this fix out. And yes, that includes arguing with me pendantically about what I've posted above. I mean it. Don't even do it. I'm not in the mood today.

Jay:
Don't sweat the negative comments. There would have been complaints regardless of how things played out. As you most certainly recall, there was mass pandemonium because a lot of people simply couldn't wait for a 3.x version of MT-B to be released in the first place.
If people want to complain, they can blame the beta testers -- and they can drop me an email any time to discuss how my installation of MT-B has blocked 9850 comment/trackback spams since I installed it. ;)

zach (and I guess Jay as well) - if your blogs are still in the database, it may just be that your username doesn't have the correct permissions set anymore. When I converted to MySQL a while back I found that I couldn't see my blogs, but I was able to fix that by changing my user permissions with MT-Medic ( http://www.nonplus.net/software/mt/MT-Medic.htm ).
I don't know if the blacklist bug is doing the same thing, but zach's post made me think of that, so it's worth a shot. Hope this helps...

Occasionally when I check spam comments to be deleted it will pull other non-spam comments out and into the delete window, sometimes from other blogs. Doesn't happen often, maybe a handful of times from the thousands of items of crap I've removed, but it is a little freaky when it does occur. Was wondering if this behaviour is related to the blog deletion bug.

Jay, Thank you so much for announcing this. It shows a lot of integrity for you to come forth and admit to making a mistake. I wish more major corporations (and one current President) that kind of courage.
The warning comes too late for me, but hopefully many others will see it before inadvertently deleting blogs. A couple weeks ago I deleted a test blog and lost an important one in the process. I posted a note on a thread in the Movable Type support forum, and it seemed like others were having similar problems at the time, though nobody was sure why. Fortunately, I had just exported the mysql database the night before, so I was able to restore everything in a matter of hours. I'm using v. 3.12, by the way. Good luck with the fix. Eager to hear when it's finished.
